The "Eisenberg"
The Eisenberg is the vinological center of southern Burgenland, which is one of the smallest wine-growing regions in Austria with a total of 450 hectares. It stretches from Rechnitz in the north to the Jennersdorf region in the south.
The great importance of the Eisenberg is also the reason why the name Eisenberg DAC was chosen as part of the DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) appellation system.
Even the ancient Romans knew about the ideal wine-growing conditions on the Eisenberg. Sandy, clayey, heavy loam in the valley, slate soils on the steep slopes and the Eisenberg basin, which is open to the south-east and absorbs the warm climate, create a unique blend that makes it possible to produce wines with an unmistakable character and regional finesse.
Blaufränkisch Eisenberg DAC and Welschriesling Eisenberg DAC
Blaufränkisch is the flagship and the predominant grape variety with around 36% of the area under vines in the Eisenberg region. Zweigelt takes second place for red wines with just over 6%, ahead of Merlot with just under 4%.
Among white wines, Welschriesling is in first place with around 19%, ahead of Grüner Veltliner with around 6% and Pinot Blanc with just over 2%. The importance of Welschriesling is made clear by the recent extension of DAC status to include this variety.
The taste experience is pure southern Burgenland: salty, spicy, dusty and mineral. Barrel ageing makes it possible to make these secondary aromas from our soils tangible.
Our region is characterized by its small-scale structure, which is reflected not only in the winegrowing, but also in the accommodation establishments. Idyllic Kellerstöckl or our guest house on the slopes of the Eisenberg invite you to enjoy a relaxing stay in south-eastern Austria.
A cross-section of the soils in our vineyards
Reihburg
The Reihburg vineyard is located on the foothills of the Eisenberg. The vines are rooted in green and blue slate, covered with medium and heavy loam. Very high iron levels and many trace elements characterize these wines.
Szapary
The bare slate is only covered by a little rocky brown earth. Szapary faces south-west and enjoys very long periods of sunshine. Filigree and very fruity wines with aromas of red fruits dominate. They are finely structured and have a salty, spicy finish.
Fasching
The Fasching vineyard borders on the Reihburg. Thanks to its south-southwest exposure, it enjoys sunshine from early morning to late evening. The soil (loamy) and climate produce wines of masculine elegance, with plenty of body, but at the same time a clear, mineral structure.
Saybritz
The grapes derive their typical mineral component from the soil, which is composed of brown earth with rocky parts and slate.
